The Georgia Ports Authority is the fastest growing port in the United States and they continue to get even bigger. Today Gov. Sonny Perdue, along with port officials, broke ground on the much-anticipated Container Berth Eight. This berth expands the port by 20 percent, almost a hundred acres.
Gov. Perdue says without the help of dedicated employees, the port would not be the fifth largest in the country. "Not only are these workers providing for their own families, they are helping to keep Georgia's economy strong, helping create jobs and opportunities all over the state," he said. "So, I'm proud to say to these workers, thank you for a job well done. You've earned the trust and the business of the people worldwide."
To give you an idea of just how much business the ports handle, last year alone, 16 million tons of cargo came across the docks at Georgia ports.
While at the ports, Gov. Perdue swore in the three newest members of the board. Savannah businessman and chairman of the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce Steve Green, retiring state senator Hugh Gillis of Soperton, and Sunny Park of Sandy Springs were all sworn in.
