Why Our High School Graduates Should Take a Citizenship Test

Sunny Park was born in 1942 in Seoul, South Korea. After coming to the United States in 1967 and gaining full citizenship in 1974, he became a successful businessman and an active member of his community. As a relative newcomer to this country, he is concerned that America’s youth are not being taught, and consequently do not fully appreciate, the principles their forbearers fought for in creating the freest nation on Earth and how fortunate they are to be Americans. 


As an immigrant, I have personally learned and benefitted from the tremendous value of this great country, the United States of America. I think it can be summarized as follows:


• Freedom — A people willing to die to maintain it.
• Pioneering spirit — Not just exploration, but an innate ability to lead and show others.
• Work ethic — Celebration in the results of hard work.
• Preservation — Keeping a history of achievements, learning from it, and making improvements for a better future.


During the first few years of my life in the United States, I was focused only on what was best for me. I spent all of my time on myself; I studied only for myself; I earned money only to satisfy myself; I learned those things which were only for the betterment of myself. That was my attitude until I became a citizen of this country.


In order to become a citizen of the United States, I, like every other immigrant seeking citizenship, had to take a test to exhibit an understanding and appreciation for the institutions and principles of this country. I was asked to answer questions regarding my understanding of and willingness to support the duties and responsibilities of being an American. These questions, and the significance they entail, are a standard part of a citizenship application.


For example, I was asked if I would take an oath of allegiance to my new country and if I would fight all enemies of the United States — even if the enemy were my home country. I was tested on my knowledge of the history, government, laws and culture of the United States. It was not a difficult test compared to those I had taken in college, but it was the beginning of a tremendous change in my life.


As I prepared for this test with very limited study materials, I discovered that the answers to the questions were not difficult, but the new, peripheral knowledge I gleaned was very fresh and invigorating to me. It gave me tremendous delight to learn about and see the value of this country, her great resources, and the many reasons that American citizens enjoy such broad freedoms and privileges . . . which were soon to be mine. I was overwhelmed with an appreciation for the pioneers of this country, for their vision of the future, with their sole purpose of making this not only the greatest country in the world, but the greatest place in the world for a person to live. From that moment on, I decided to dedicate my life not just to myself and my family, but to my new country as well.


As I was sworn in as a new citizen, I thought to myself that not only had I gained the blessings of American citizenship, but that America had just gained its most patriotic citizen ever.


Since the day I took my citizenship test, I have continuously thought, “What if every citizen were asked to answer those same questions that I faced, or were asked to periodically study the material I studied? Would that instill in them the sense of dedication and patriotism that it did in me? Would it focus us on our basic national values of hard work and moral correctness?”


I have met so many Americans, fortunate to have been born American, who know history but fail to grasp the advantages, duties and responsibilities of their citizenship. When I see the lack of respect many Americans have for our country and for what she stands, especially the younger generation, I become pessimistic about our future. It makes me quite angry to hear even a few Americans complain about their country while failing to appreciate the many blessings of just being an American.


I’d like to help this country preserve its historic values and prevent them from vanishing completely. I feel very strongly that this must be God’s reason for sending me to America. If we cannot require all citizens to study and understand the value of American citizenship, then perhaps we could at least require high school students to pass a test, similar to the citizenship test I had to take, which might impart in them the same sense of appreciation and patriotism with which I was left. This test should become a requirement for graduation from our high schools. You take the test. See how you do. And be thankful for your great country.

1. For religious freedom.


2. Because they were required to pay taxes, but had no right of vote.

5. The people are guaranteed the right of freedom of religion, freedom of assembly, freedom of the press, and the freedom to vote.


6. To balance the power within the government so that one branch of government does not get too powerful. This system is called checks and balances, and it was adopted by our founders to avoid the “King George” experience.


7. 100 Senators: two from each state.


8. Connecticut, New Hampshire, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Rhode Island and Maryland.

"참전용사들의 수고와 희생 잊지 않겠다"

한국전 조지아 출신 전사자 740명 추모 한미우호협회(회장 박선근, 이사장 프랭크 블레이크)는 254 오전 10시 30분 둘루스 페인-콜리 하우스에서 한국전쟁 휴전 73주년을 기념해 미군 참전용사 헌화식을 개최했다. 기념식에서는 한국과 한국인을 지키기 위해 한국전에 참전했다 희생된 740명의 조지아 출신 미군들을 추모하고 생존 참전용사들에게 감사를 표하는 시간을 가졌다. 1992년부터 매년 계속된 한미우호협회의 한국전 기념식에서 마이클 박 씨가 사회를 맡았으며, 기수단 입장에 이어 아틀란타 연합장로교회 어린이 합창단이 한미 양국 국가를 연주했다. 연합장로교회 손정훈 담임목사가 개회기도를 했다. 한미우호협회는 한국전쟁 참전용사들을 모두 호명하며 박수를 보냈으며, 어린이 합창단 단원들이 참전 용사에게 꽃을 달아 드리는 순서도 가졌다. 예년처럼 각 단체들은 희생자들을 추모하는 화환 증정 행사를 가졌다. 박선근 회장은 8세의 어린 나이에 일어난 한국전 당시의 상황을 설명하며 참석한 은퇴 및 현역 군인, 그리고 한인 단체장들의 이름을 거명하며 감사의 말을 전했다. 박 회장은 “한미우호협회는 당신들의 수고와 희생을 결코 잊지 않겠다”고 다짐하며 최근에 애틀랜타를 비롯해 미국 6개 도시에 세워진 “땡큐 아메리카!” 빌보드 광고를 소개하기도 했다. 폴 김 한미우호협회 이사는 참석한 한국전 참전용사들을 소개하며 감사를 표했으며, 육군대장 출신의 래리 엘리스 전 한미우호협회 이사장, 이준호 주애틀랜타총영사, 김기환 동남부한인회연합회장, 마이클 렛 주상원 한미우호코커스 의장 등이 참전용사들을 추모하고 기억하는 연설을 했다. 협회는 기조 연설자인 리처드 드웨인 윌슨 조지아 내셔널 가드 사령관(소장)에세 감사패를 증정했으며, 윌슨 사령관은 “자유와 민주주의를 위해 희생한 조지아 출신 740명의 미군 참전용사들에게 감사한다”며 “이제 민주화와 경제성장을 이룩한 한국의 발전상을 보면 참전 용사들의 수고와 희생이 결코 헛되지 않았다”고 말했다. 참전용사인 한국전참전용사회 레이 데이비스지부 회장은 답사에서 "흔히들 한국전쟁을 잊혀진 전쟁이라 말하지만 한인들의 감사와 기억을 보면 절대 잊혀진 전쟁이 아니다"라며 "한인 커뮤니티의 발전을 기원한다"고 말했다. 이날 행사의 대미는 엘리스 장군의 부인인 진 엘리스 여사가 전쟁포로 및 실종자를 추모하고 기리는 시간을 끝으로 막을 내렸다. 박요셉 기자 Source: https://higoodday.com/news/1015659

첫 행사 370명 참석했지만 올해 참전용사 4명뿐…“한 시대 마무리…슬프다” 35년 동안 매년 여름이면 조지아의 한국전 참전용사들이 한자리에 모였다. 한인 어린이들은 가슴에 꽃을 달아드렸고, 한인사회 지도자들은 고개를 숙여 감사를 전했다. 전쟁 기록 그러나 그 오랜 행사가 올해를 마지막으로 막을 내린다. 한미우호협회 박선근 회장은 “한국전 참전용사 대부분이 별세했고, 생존한 분들도 건강상의 이유로 행사 참석이 어려워졌다”며 내년부터 정전협정 기념 초청 행사를 열지 않기로 했다고 밝혔다. 1991년 시작된 행사는 35년 동안 한 해도 빠짐없이 이어졌다. 첫 행사에는 약 370명의 참전용사가 참석했지만, 올해 둘루스 페인-콜리 하우스에 자리한 생존 참전용사는 4명뿐이었다. 지난해 참석자는 14명이었다. ◇ 370명에서 4명으로 한미우호협회는 24일 한국전쟁 정전협정 73주년을 앞두고 조지아 지역 참전용사들을 초청해 마지막 헌화 행사를 열었다. 전문가 및 무역 협회 기념식에서는 한국전쟁에서 전사한 조지아 출신 미군 740명을 추모하고, 생존 참전용사들의 희생에 감사를 전했다. 기수단 입장에 이어 아틀란타 연합장로교회 어린이 합창단이 한국과 미국 국가를 불렀다. 손정훈 담임목사가 개회기도를 맡았으며, 어린이들은 참전용사들의 가슴에 직접 꽃을 달아드렸다. 박 회장은 “첫 행사 당시 참전용사들의 평균 나이는 60세 정도였고 약 370명이 참석했다”며 “올해는 네 분만 참석해 마음이 무겁다”고 말했다. 한국전쟁 발발 당시 8세였던 그는 “한미우호협회는 여러분의 수고와 희생을 결코 잊지 않겠다”고 강조했다. ◇ “한인들은 우릴 절대 잊지 않는다” 한국전참전용사회 레이 데이비스 애틀랜타 지회 윌리엄 스투바 지회장은 이날 한인사회에 감사의 뜻을 전했다. 그는 “흔히 한국전쟁을 잊혀진 전쟁이라고 하지만 한인들은 우리를 절대 잊지 않는다”며 “한인 커뮤니티의 발전을 기원한다”고 말했다. 이어 “한국은 미국의 가장 훌륭한 동맹국 가운데 하나”라고 강조했다. 행사에는 미 해병대 출신인 리치 매코믹 연방 하원의원(공화, 조지아)도 참석해 박선근 회장과 한인사회에 감사를 표했다. 또한 조지아 주의회 한미코커스 의장인 마이클 렛 상원의원은 참석 참전용사들에게 감사의 뜻을 담은 결의안을 전달했다. ◇ 마지막 행사를 지킨 사람들 행사의 마지막을 누구보다 무겁게 지켜본 사람 가운데 한 명은 티나 마리 코리아 조지아주방위군 유스챌린지재단 회장이었다. 그는 35년 전 첫 행사 때부터 매년 행사 준비와 진행을 위해 봉사해왔던 코리아 회장은 “한 시대가 마무리되는 것 같아 슬프다”고 말했다. 행사장에는 여전히 한미 양국의 국기가 나란히 섰고, 어린이 합창단의 노래와 헌화 순서도 예년과 다르지 않았다. 그러나 해마다 줄어든 참전용사들의 빈자리는 더 이상 채울 수 없었다. 전쟁포로와 실종자를 추모하는 순서를 끝으로 마지막 행사는 마무리됐다. 한미우호협회는 최근 애틀랜타를 포함한 미국 6개 도시에 ‘땡큐 아메리카(Thank You America)’ 빌보드를 설치하며 참전용사 감사 활동을 이어가고 있다. 박 회장은 연례 행사는 올해로 종료되지만 참전용사들의 희생을 기억하고 알리는 활동은 계속할 것이라고 밝혔다. 이상연 기자 paul@atlantak.com Source: https://atlantak.com/35%EB%85%84-%EC%9D%B4%EC%96%B4%EC%A7%84-%ED%95%9C%EA%B5%AD%EC%A0%84-%EC%B0%B8%EC%A0%84%EC%9A%A9%EC%82%AC-%EA%B0%90%EC%82%AC%ED%96%89%EC%82%AC-%EC%98%AC%ED%95%B4%EB%A1%9C-%EB%A7%89-%EB%82%B4%EB%A6%B0/

美 6개 도시 고속도로에 한국전 참전 미군 감사 빌보드 하루 150만대 차량에 감사 메시지 전해 박선근 한미우호협회장 사비 털어 광고..."미군 희생 잊지 않겠다" 7월24일 조지아서 한국전 정전기념 추모식도 열어 한국전쟁 당시 대한민국을 위해 희생한 미군 장병들에게 감사의 뜻을 전하는 대형 빌보드 광고가 올해에도 미국 주요 도시 고속도로에 내걸렸다. 1996년 시작된 이 캠페인은 올해로 30년째를 맞으며 한국전 참전용사들의 희생을 미국 사회에 알리는 대표적인 민간 감사 운동으로 자리 잡았다. 미국 한미우호협회(AKFS. 회장 박선근)는 한국전쟁 정전협정 체결 73주년을 맞아 20일(현지시간)부터 애틀랜타, 뉴욕, 시카고, 댈러스, 휴스턴, 로스앤젤레스 등 미국 6개 주요 도시의 고속도로에 '땡큐 아메리카'(Thank You America) 빌보드 광고를 설치해 운영하고 있다고 밝혔다.
